Sun shines on Sutton Coldfield food extravaganza

The Sutton Coldfield Food Festival – the town’s biggest event of the year – was a sizzling success. The sun shone as more than 100 food and drink traders filled The Parade in the town centre from Friday, 11 to Sunday, 13 April.

A Culinary Delight

Following the record-breaking success of last year’s festival, organisers announced that the 2025 event featured even more culinary delights and family fun. From sizzling street food to indulgent desserts, local specialties, and refreshing drinks, there was something to please every palate.

A Collaborative Effort

The three-day event is a collaboration between Visit Royal Sutton Coldfield BID and LSD Promotions, aiming to celebrate local flavors and community spirit.

Free Entertainment for All

The festival also offered a range of free entertainment, including the Comedy Waiters Duo and Stilt-Walking Chefs, who appeared on Saturday and Sunday throughout the day. Additional activities included free face painting, glitter tattoos for children, and live music performances.

Community Excitement

Speaking before the event, Michelle Baker, BID manager, expressed her excitement: “We are excited to bring the Food Festival back to Sutton Coldfield for a second year. This event has truly become the town’s biggest free event, and we’re thrilled to showcase the best local and regional food once again. From delicious street food to fantastic family-friendly activities, there’s something for everyone. Sutton Coldfield restaurant shuts doors after seven years

Sudden closure at Mere Green eatery

A well-known Sutton Coldfield restaurant has closed its doors suddenly, seven years after its opening, with the loss of a number of jobs.

Pierre’s in Mere Green, formerly Bistrot Pierre, was among eight restaurant closures nationwide, including Bistrot Pierre in Birmingham city centre’s Gas Street, in a deal to save the remaining 10 locations.

Five of the closures are in the Midlands, including restaurants in Kidderminster, Leamington Spa, and Coventry.

The closures have led to the loss of 158 jobs. The company cited rising minimum wage and national insurance costs imposed by the government as reasons that made smaller locations “unviable.”

They also stated that the administrators will provide support to those affected by the job losses.

The French-themed chain had recently changed its Bistrot Pierre in Mulberry Walk, Mere Green into a “Pierre’s” last September.

This change was intended to shift away from formal dining and create a “more informal drinking and eating venue.”

The revamp included complete refurbishment and a new look and a new menu.

Sutton Coldfield to host 2025 Victorian Christmas Market

sutton-market.jpeg

Sutton Coldfield is to host a new Victorian-themed Christmas market later this year, it has been announced.

Following on from the 22-day festive market in 2024, Visit Royal Sutton Coldfield BID and market operator LSD Promotion have announced a new format for this year.

Organisers have said the 2025 market will run across two weekends, each spanning four days, taking on board feedback after last year’s market.

The first event will be held from 11 to 14 December, followed by the second from 18 to 21 December.

With a Victorian theme throughout, the market will offer an array of gifts, handmade crafts, seasonal food and mulled drinks, all in an inviting, festive atmosphere.

Each stallholder will be dressed in Victorian attire, adding to the immersive experience.

A variety of Victorian-inspired entertainment will also take place – including traditional Christmas carols, street performers, living statues, stilt walkers, story tellers, magic shows and festive rides.

Michelle Baker, manager of Visit Royal Sutton Coldfield BID, said: “We saw the positive impact that the 22-day Christmas market had on Sutton Coldfield last year.

“The community’s strong support showed that a festive attraction is something our town needs in order to compete with other towns, but we also wanted to respond to feedback.

“We believe this new eight-day format with a new Victorian theme, will bring something fresh and magical to our town, and we look forward to delivering a truly memorable experience for all.”

LSD Promotions will be responsible for booking all traders for the market, while Visit Royal Sutton Coldfield BID will be organising the entertainment schedule, ensuring that the market offers an authentic and immersive Victorian experience.

Urgent Treatment Centre moves to Good Hope

Temporary move to Sutton Coldfield

Sutton Coldfield’s Good Hope Hospital will now host an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) which has moved on a temporary and emergency basis from High Street Erdington.

North Birmingham UTC stopped operating at Erdington Health and Wellbeing Centre and is now fully operational at Good Hope Hospital. It will operate between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week.

The new location at Good Hope Hospital provides patients and UTC colleagues with better security and more modern facilities, while it will also support in reducing pressure on the hospital’s A&E department by ensuring patients who inappropriately attend A&E can be triaged and treated more quickly to the UTC.

UTCs provide urgent medical help when it’s not a life-threatening emergency and patients can access any of the six UTCs that operate across Birmingham and Solihull by contacting NHS 111 online or over the phone.

Patients can access, via NHS 111, any of the six UTCs in operation across Birmingham and Solihull, including Erdington UTC which is based at Stockland Green Primary Care Centre.

Faith Button, chief delivery officer at NHS Birmingham and Solihull ICB, said: “We remain deeply committed to the provision of healthcare services across our city and borough, including Erdington and Erdington UTC remains in operation.

“I want to stress that this is a temporary relocation which has been carried out on an emergency basis and this decision is not one which has been taken lightly.

“We are confident that the new location at Good Hope Hospital will lead to better experiences for our communities and we would encourage anyone who needs urgent healthcare to make use of it via NHS 111.”

The permanent future location of North Birmingham UTC will be decided as part of a strategic review of all UTCs across Birmingham and Solihull, which is in its preliminary stage.

As part of this review, the NHS will be engaging and consulting with communities across the area to ensure their vies play a key part in the NHS’s strategic thinking and decision-making process.

Meanwhile, the public is urged to use the right service at the right time including pharmacists, GPs and NHS 111 and 111 online if they need advice and support for health conditions. They should only call 999 or attend A&E in life-threatening emergencies.

Pharmacists can suggest treatments that do not need a prescription for a range of conditions and most offer a service called Pharmacy First which means they can provide prescription medicine for seven conditions without the need to see a GP or make an appointment.

Community Spirit Shines at Broadleaf House Fundraiser

Ellen McGinn and Kirsty Homer from Age Concern receive the cheque from Tracey Walsh and Phil Holyoak from Adlington Retirement Living

Sutton Coldfield retirement home boosts charity

Retirement home residents and staff in Sutton Coldfield made it a merry new year for charity after a seasonal fundraising event. Representatives from Age Concern Boldmere visited Broadleaf House in Wylde Green last week to meet with some of the homeowners and staff who raised funds for the local charity before Christmas.

Ellen McGinn, Guidance Co-ordinator, and Kirsty Homer, Service Manager, from Age Concern were presented with a cheque for £425 raised by homeowners, guests and staff who hosted a festive gathering at the exclusive retirement community, from Adlington Retirement Living.

The event was a huge success, attracting more than 50 attendees to enjoy festive baguettes, mince pies and a selection of hot and cold drinks whilst local singer songwriter Daniel performed in the restaurant, and a raffle added to the fun.

Graham, a homeowner at Broadleaf House, who had already received the invaluable help of Age Concern with the daunting process of applying for a ‘blue badge’ said: “It was great to see so many people meet together in support of such a worthy organisation.

We all enjoyed our time together, appreciating some festive treats and the opportunity to express our support of Age Concern which does so much important work in our community”.

Alexandra Johnson, Sales and Marketing Director for Adlington Retirement Living said: “We were delighted to welcome so many homeowners and guests to our festive gathering and to raise funds for Age Concern.

“It was a wonderful, relaxed occasion, bringing together our homeowners, guests and even some local businesses who attended.

“Moving into an Adlington Retirement Living apartment is far more than just relocating to a new home. It’s an opportunity to become part of a thriving community and enjoy the support of a close-knit network.

“Our communities provide a safe, secure and happy environment with a circle of friends, a family of like-minded individuals, and a true sense of belonging.”

Broadleaf House offers a range of 57 age-exclusive one, two and three-bedroomed apartments. Communal facilities include a homeowners’ lounge, coffee lounge, on-site restaurant, hair salon, therapy room, and activities studio, all of which can be used by homeowners as an extension of their own private apartments.

Adlington Retirement Living also provides an on-site management team available 24hours a day, 365 days a year. Like a good neighbour, the team is the first point of contact for any problems, large or small, and always goes the extra mile to help.

Sutton Coldfield Care Home Supports Veterans

A Sutton Coldfield care home has been recognised for its standards of care for veterans.

Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, has officially received ‘Veteran Friendly’ status.

The Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) is a collaboration between Armed Forces charities Royal Star & Garter and Royal British Legion, and NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA), with funding support from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

To achieve their Veteran Friendly status, Mercia Grange was required to meet eight standards. These included: noting Armed Forces status within care plans; addressing social isolation; and signposting to support services, such as their local Royal British Legion branch, and other charities that provide support for veterans or partners of veterans.

Mercia Grange supports veterans through a range of activities, including intergenerational history groups. The team also learn about any resident’s armed forces background within a week of the resident moving into the home.

Michael McNelis, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, said: “We’re so proud to have become a VFF-approved care home.

“We pride ourselves on being warm and inclusive to all, and with so many veterans in our home, it was important for us to ensure we can provide the right environment for them to lead fulfilling lives. We’ve learnt so much in the process and have already started implementing activities such as intergenerational history groups.

“The entire team has been working tirelessly to achieve the accreditation, and I’d like to say a big thank you to all of them. We’re looking forward to welcoming more veterans from the community into our home!”
